I was organizing the books in my room (by genre for those of you who are curious) and I got to the comics. I personally feel that a comic CAN count as a book, if it is worthy. Existential type comics such as Calvin and Hobbes counts, definitely. Actually, Calvin and Hobbes is a perfect comic, in my opinion. It is clever, funny, sweet, moving, intelligent and mischievous. It is perfect. That definitely counts as a book. I also have some comics of The Simpsons. Those, while hilarious I do not count as books. They are only humorous, there is no real content. No intelligence beyond the humor.
I do not feel like magazines count as books. Well, that is not entirely true. I think that, once again, intelligent magazines such as National Geographic counts. But something like People or Cat Fancy do not. Those have nothing beneath the surface. They are simply entertaining and not even that much.
Graphic novels count. Positively. I often draw art to my books. A graphic novel is just a book that has been fully arted.
